altA grand-mother of 57 hit he jackpot at her local bingo hall last week when she won a massive £100,000. Joan Caveney might only be 57-years-old, but she’s already got nine grandchildren, which is a lot of Christmas and birthday presents to buy. Luckily, thanks to her whopping windfall at Mecca Bingo in Lonend, Paisley on Tuesday, 20th August 2013, she won’t be struggling with the gift shopping for a while… Joan works at Paisley’s Royal Alexandra Hospital as a clerical worker in maternity unit, and says she normally goes to the club on her own for “a nice night out.” Normally, she parks herself at table 536 and enjoys having a chat with whoever sits next to her, and it’s number 536 that she credits with bringing about her good fortunes.  Joan says it’s the first table she ever sat at when she first visited the Mecca Bingo club in Paisley, and she says it’s “nice to have the same people about you.”

Having been a massive bingo fan for 35 years, Joan started going to her local Mecca Club since it opened back in 2006, and she attends several times a week. On the fateful day, she didn’t just beat her fellow Paisley club-goers to the jackpot, but thousands of players around the UK as well. The £100k game was part of Mecca’s Summer of Fun promotion, which reached its climax with a mega-prize weekend.

Joan says she’s going to wait before making any big decisions about what to do with her winnings, but admits she’s always “dreamt of owning a Mini Cooper” and says her “kitchen could do with a refresh.” Having hankered after the Mini since the age of 15, she confesses that she’s sorely tempted with fulfilling her dreams, but at the same time, wonders “is that selfish?” Her mind is made up about the kitchen makeover, however, so we’ll bet it looks like a million dollars (or should that be £100k?) by the time it’s finished!

57-year-old Joan is married to Ronnie (aged 62), and has been celebrating her massive win with three of her daughters, and one step-daughter. She says the family have an upcoming holiday to Tenerife in September, and that she might take the opportunity to “calm down and let things settle” while she’s away.

The regulars at Mecca Bingo in Paisley are celebrating Joan’s windfall too, as her win guaranteed them a share of £50,000, which works out at £147 each. WTG Joan!
